Iron Metabolism: Ferritin and Iron Saturation

Post by TropicStrength »

My Serum Iron is high but Ferritin is low. Iron Saturation is at 55%. What does this mean for oxygen transport?

High saturation with low ferritin suggests you are using your stores but have plenty of iron circulating. Maybe a recent high-iron meal?

Be careful. If Saturation stays above 50%, you risk iron overload in the organs (hemochromatosis). Check your genetics.

Do you take Vitamin C with your meals? It significantly increases iron absorption.

I have the opposite problem. High Ferritin (400) but low iron. It's acting as an acute phase reactant due to inflammation.

That's tricky. Ferritin is such a confusing marker because of the inflammation overlap.

Always look at the TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity). If that is low, you have plenty of iron.

My TIBC is always high, meaning I'm always slightly iron deficient. I eat red meat daily too.

Heavy sweating loses a surprising amount of minerals, iron included.

Good point. The intensity of training changes the "normal" ranges for us.
