My grip is failing before my back on deadlifts. Should I use straps or train grip?

Both. Use straps for top sets so your back gets the work, but train grip separately.

I have heard mixed things about hook grip. Is it worth the pain?

I stick to mixed grip, just switch sides every set.

Or just use liquid chalk. It makes a huge difference.
