Metabolic Stress vs Mechanical Tension for Hypertrophy
Is the "pump" actually a driver for growth, or just a byproduct of tension? Let's look at the cellular swelling evidence.

Tension is king. Metabolic stress is the icing on the cake, primarily via satellite cell activation.

What about Blood Flow Restriction? That is pure metabolic stress with low tension, yet it grows muscle.
Re: Metabolic Stress vs Mechanical Tension for Hypertrophy
BFR still creates high motor unit recruitment because the slow-twitch fibers fatigue so fast.

Re: Metabolic Stress vs Mechanical Tension for Hypertrophy
Exactly. It essentially "tricks" the body into thinking the load is heavier than it is.

Re: Metabolic Stress vs Mechanical Tension for Hypertrophy
So if we use high-load mechanical tension, is the pump even necessary?

Necessary? No. Beneficial for connective tissue health? Probably.

I find that 2 heavy sets followed by 1 high-rep "pump" set gives the best results.

That aligns with the "Power-Hypertrophy" model of training.

Would be interesting to see a study comparing pure volume matched tension vs stress.
