Developing Explosive Power for Rugby and Contact Sports
Rugby requires a blend of absolute strength and the ability to move that mass quickly. I focus heavily on Olympic variations like the power clean and push press. Plyometrics also play a huge role. You want to be a tank that can sprint. We usually do our explosive work at the start of the session when the nervous system is fresh. Any other suggestions for improving lateral explosiveness?

Sled drags and lateral bounds are mint for rugby. Really builds that drive in the scrum and the sidestep.

Medicine ball throws are underrated for rotational power too.

Do not forget the neck work. Vital for contact sports to prevent concussions and injuries during tackles.
